1. Component Purpose

The 12V automotive supply is one of the harshest electrical environments. Load dump transients (when the battery is disconnected while the alternator is charging) can produce spikes up to 40V or more. Alternator spikes, inductive switching from relays and motors, and reverse battery conditions are routine.

A unidirectional, AEC-Q101 qualified TVS diode clamps these transients. Standoff of 18–22V is above normal charging voltage (~14.8V) with margin. The ≥38V clamp protects downstream automotive-grade regulators.
