28. TVS Diode for USB Data Line ESD Protection

Aarav is designing a USB-enabled embedded board with a USB Type-B connector for external communication.

The USB D+ and D− data lines are exposed to the outside world through the connector, making them vulnerable to ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) strikes during cable plugging and handling.

To protect the MCU's USB peripheral from ESD damage, he needs to place a bidirectional TVS diode on each data line.

Key requirements:

  • USB data lines operate at 3.3V signal levels with 5V VBUS on the bus

  • TVS standoff voltage: 5V to 6.5V

  • Clamping voltage: ≤17V

  • Capacitance: ≤5pF (critical — high capacitance will distort fast USB data signals)

  • SMD package: SOD-882

The company's approved vendor list (AVL) specifies Littelfuse for circuit protection components, so the part must be selected from Littelfuse on DigiKey.

SOD-882-TVS-Diode

Help him select a suitable bidirectional TVS diode from Littelfuse on DigiKey.
