1. Component Purpose

A 5V logic input can be damaged if the signal voltage exceeds the IC’s maximum rating (often 5.5V or less). Voltage spikes from nearby switching circuits, ESD, or cable transients can easily exceed this.

A 5.1V Zener diode placed across the signal line to ground acts as a voltage clamp. During normal operation (signal ≤5V), the Zener does nothing. When the voltage tries to rise above 5.1V, the Zener conducts and clamps the voltage to a safe level, absorbing the excess energy.
